Catalina Island, located just off the coast of Southern California, is a picturesque destination known for its crystal-clear waters, rugged landscapes, and charming small-town vibe. Catalina Island has two main towns: Avalon and Two Harbors.

Two Harbors is much smaller and more remote, located at the island’s western end. It’s a peaceful getaway for nature lovers, perfect for camping, hiking, and water sports like kayaking and diving. With just one restaurant and a laid-back vibe, it’s the place to go if you’re seeking solitude and outdoor adventure.

In this guide, I’ll highlight the top activities and share helpful tips for planning your trip to Avalon on Catalina Island.

Most visitors travel to Catalina Island via the Catalina Express ferry from Long Beach, San Pedro, or Dana Point. The trip to Avalon, Catalina’s main town, takes about an hour and should be booked in advance, especially on weekends. The ride is generally smooth, though the ocean can get choppy at times. Round-trip tickets typically cost between $84 and $94 per adult, depending on the ferry service and time of year, with discounts available for children and seniors.

For a more luxurious option, helicopter rides are available, offering a quick trip with aerial views of the island.

Catalina is a year-round destination with mild weather, but spring and fall are ideal for fewer crowds and pleasant temperatures. Summer is popular for beach activities, but prices are higher. Winter is considered the off-season, but it’s still a great time to visit due to fewer crowds and lower prices. Just pack a jacket for cooler mornings and evenings.

A weekend is ideal for experiencing the island’s highlights but I recommend spending 2-3 days to explore it more fully.

Despite the height, parasailing is surprisingly calming as you glide effortlessly through the air. You won’t feel your stomach drop like you’re on a rollercoaster. Parasail operators will ask you in advance if you want to dip your feet in the sea.
