Insider Tips for a Magical Experience at Utah Ice Castles

If you’re looking for a unique winter experience, consider visiting ice castles. Ice castles are intricate and elaborate structures made from ice, typically built during the winter months. They are created by a team of artists and builders who use a combination of techniques, including shaping and carving the ice to create stunning ice formations. They are popular tourist attractions, and currently, there are 7 locations in North America where you can experience them: Colorado, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Utah, and Wisconsin.

I had the pleasure of visiting ice castles in Midway, Utah, in 2022 and 2023, and enjoyed seeing its beauty in both day time and night time settings. With my handmade gowns, (link), I felt like a fairytale snow queen, come to life in this winter paradise. This magical place offers not only great photo opportunities but also an enjoyable experience for all ages. The castles include breathtaking LED-lit sculptures, slides, ice-carved tunnels, ice caverns, sleigh rides and much more.

Best time to visit Ice Castles

I recommend visiting the Ice Castles on weekdays and early in the morning to avoid the crowds. However, if weekends are your only option, your best bet is to visit early morning.

Visiting ice castles during the daytime is great for clearer views and pictures of the ice sculptures, while at night, dazzling colors of lights illuminate the ice sculptures. Both times offer a truly magical winter experience for all ages. For me, visiting at night was a bit more challenging for taking pictures due to the larger crowds and colder temperatures.

What to pack

When visiting the ice castles, it’s important to dress warmly and wear comfortable clothing to make the most of your experience. Here’s a list of essentials:

  • Warm Clothing – Layer up with thermal wear, sweaters, and insulated jackets to stay warm in the freezing temperatures. If you’re like me and want to wear a long dress for photos, don’t forget to layer up with these thermal pantyhose leggings – they are perfect to wear under a dress or skirt.
  • Waterproof Boots – Opt for waterproof, insulated boots with good traction, as the ground can be icy and slippery.
  • Wool socks – Wool socks is an excellent at insulating, even when wet, and helps keep your feet warm by trapping heat. It also wicks moisture away, keeping your feet dry and comfortable in snowy conditions.
  • Gloves, Hats, and Scarves – Pack thermal or wool gloves, a warm hat, and a scarf to protect against the cold.
  • Snow Pants – If you plan to play or slide, wear snow pants to keep your body warm.
  • Hand Warmers – To keep my hands warm and cozy, I keep some hand warmers in my jacket’s pocket, ready to use when needed.

  • Battery pack – I always keep this one with me, and it easily fits in your pocket or a small pouch.
  • Sunglasses – The sun reflecting off the ice can be bright, so pack sunglasses to protect your eyes.
